Details This paper proposes multi-population modified brain storm optimization (MP-MBSO) and its application to optimal operation planning of energy plants. The problem can be formulated as a mixed integer nonlinear optimization problem and various evolutionary computation techniques such as particle swarm optimization (PSO), differential evolutionary PSO (DEEPSO), and brain storm optimization (BSO) have been applied so far. The proposed MP-MBSO based method can improve solution quality and speed-up computation time. The proposed method is compared with the conventional DEEPSO and BSO based methods. It is verified that total energy cost by the proposed method is lower than those by the comparative methods for a typical energy plant.
