概要 | The response threshold (RT) concept explains how social insects allocate tasks, with individual workers responding differently to task-related stimuli. A mathematical RT model has been proposed, but its applicability remains unclear. To evaluate it, researchers used an automated system to track movements between the nest and foraging area in five colonies of Camponotus japonicus ants. They analyzed (i) how foraging labor was distributed and (ii) the stability of individual foraging rankings. Results showed that a few ants did most of the foraging, following a generalized gamma distribution. Rankings of foraging activity were stable for about a month but broke down within a few months. The findings suggest that careful, data-based evaluation of RT models is necessary. |
