概要 | This study develops a mathematical model of garden ants (Lasius japonicus) to examine how varying levels of stochasticity in pheromone trail-following affect group foraging efficiency. Simulations show that the optimal mix of deterministic and stochastic ants changes with the environment: stable conditions favor mildly stochastic ants, while variable environments benefit from a mix of highly stochastic and deterministic ants. The interaction between individual randomness and pheromone cues helps regulate foraging dynamics. Introducing variability in pheromone sensitivity further enhances collective efficiency, highlighting the strategic role of stochasticity in adaptive group behavior. |
