Title Body, Emotion, Space, Atmosphere as "Margins" in Organization Theory: Toward Extending the Scope of Organization Studies
Contribution Type Sole-authored
Journal TypeJapan
Volume, Issue, Page pp.537-562
Details This study attempts to legitimize subjects that have not previously been considered "marginal" in traditional modern organization theory. While various disciplines such as sociology, economics, business administration, social psychology, and cultural anthropology have successfully explained parts of the phenomenon of organizations, this study clarifies, based on current organizational studies, how to deal with the "margins" that have been left unexplained. The "margins" to be examined are: body, emotion, space, and atmosphere. In modern organizational theory, which is structured around the core concept of rationality, the existence of these objects has either been disregarded or substituted with other objects for analysis. Of the four, body and space have been most frequently taken for granted; rarely subjects of research in themselves.
