Details | ModE trench is such a multivalent word that it may refer to a path cut through a forest (now obsolete), safely protected place, an intestinal worm parasitic in horses, or a colicky pain in the abdomen. The verb trench implies the motion of something encroaching. Watkins shows the word is derived from PIE *terə-2, 'to cross over.'
An analogical approach would help us understand the expanding potential of the PIE root. Japanese kiru covers a wide range of meanings and implies a frictional force needed to clear a forest, create a ditch, or pierce through a narrow tube. The analogy employed between *terə-2 and kiru would make it possible to bring together the two IE roots that Watkins distinguishes — *terə-1, 'to rub,' and *terə-2 — both of which share the sememe 'to use frictional force.' |
