Details | This paper examines the changes and expansion of the EU's Geographical Indication (GI) system and Japan's response to these developments. It highlights the increasing emphasis on social valuation regarding the connection to the place of origin, the role of historical elements in social valuation, challenges in expanding GIs to handicrafts and industrial products, the inclusion of additional production areas and expansion to broader regions, the aspect of GIs as trade barriers, and considerations for mutual recognition. The paper proposes that Japan's GI system should focus on strategic protection and utilization. Considering that GIs are not yet a universal international standard, the paper also emphasizes the importance of combining GIs with other intellectual property rights, such as trademarks, and with regulations against unfair competition. |
