Details In recent years, impact measurement methodologies for nonprofits and social enterprises such as Social Return on Investment (SROI) are highly paid attention. Although certain kinds of methodologies tend to be under discussion, it is important to start with designing a measurement style in accordance with a conceptual impact measurement framework. So far, a lot of different kinds of impact measurement methodologies such as IRIS, SIMPLE and GIIRS as well as SROI. Nonprofits and social enterprises need to choose a methodology that best fits their purposes of impact measurement. Therefore, we need to think the purpose first, instead of a certain methodology. SROI has two distinctive features: (1) monetization of the value of impact, and (2) stakeholder involvement in the measurement process. This paper argues that (1) nonprofits are motivated to adopt SROI to win the fundraising competition with a high SROI value, although the comparability of SROI value is very limited. This paper also argues that (2) using monetization as a common language among the stakeholders is not value-neutral. There have been a lot of studies and discussion over SROI in Europe and the US. However, nonprofits have not widely accepted impact measurement yet in Japan. We need to think of diffusing impact measurement framework to nonprofits and help nonprofits properly choose their own measurement methodologies.
