Details | The Japanese translation of Lance Bennett's Osutoraria mikai bijutsu (The Primitive Art of Australia) carries on the opening page an English title: Art of the Dreamtime, but this monumental book, published after the great success of the first exhibition of Australian aboriginal art, has never been published in the original English language. This essay explains the issues around and behind the exhibition and the book, about its author Lance Bennett, his colleague and lifelong partner Barbara Spencer, and Dorothy Bennett, his mother and the initial collector of the early Arhnemland bark paintings, as well as the difficult decisions of exhibiting or not exhibiting indigenous art works and knowledge behind them. |
