Details In the 19th century, with the advent of the newest means of transportation, the railroad, the fiction incorporating rail travel appeared in the literature of many countries.
In this presentation, I will compare the "Carta primera" (1864) of Cartas desde mi celda by Gustavo Adolfoo Bécquer (1836-70), which has been considered the pioneer of Spanish railroad literature (prose), and Benito Pérez Galdós's (1843-1920) Rosalía, which was found as a handwritten draft. Rosalía will be compared and their respective merits as railroad literature will be enumerated. I will then highlight the decisive differences between the two works and show that these differences are based on the different aesthetic horizons of the two authors. And I argue that if Rosalía had been published at the time, Pérez Galdós would have been a pioneer of railroad fiction in Spain.
