Title The renunciation of Christian faith and its substitutions: the case of modernists and the Auden generation
Contribution Type Sole-authored
Volume, Issue, Page pp.1-40
Details My aim in this paper is to show how traumatic the renunciation of Christian faith by modernists and poets of the Auden generation was to them and that each poet and novelist tried to find an alternative substitute and in the process had to confront radical changes of their world view and new way of creating poems and novels to correspond with the new world view. Little attention has been given to the point of the renunciation of Christian faith by modernists, Auden or MacNeice. I think it has been neglected because it has been thought of as a part of the general crisis of faith, that is the crisis of the dogmas of Christianity in contact with Darwinism and anthropology and Freudean psychoanalysis.
