Contents Online lecture. Through the analysis of the cuisine of West Africa and the Brazilian Northeast, the lecture discussed the circumstances and the period in which the chilli pepper became a leading ingredient in West African food culture. It presented the hypothesis that the returnees who came back to this area(mostly Nigeria and Republic of Benin today) from Brazil in the second half of the 19th century played a major role in this process.
