概要	This special panel aims to discuss Japanese data protection - an issue oft neglected in European discussions. Japan's public-sector only data protection laws from the 80s were finally expanded to cover the private sector in 2005. In turn, a revision in 2015 introduced a single Data Protection Authority. However, enforcement remains weak. In particular, the following questions will be considered: - What are the prospects for real data protection finally coming to Japanese citizens? - Will Japanese manufacturers of 'Internet of Things' technologies put their weight behind EU adequacy? - Will major private sector breaches like Benesse ever result in fines or prosecution? - Will public sector breaches like the National Pensions Agency lead to better public sector data security?
